Dental Crowns or caps are custom-made restorations, which fit over your prepared natural Tooth for overall great-looking Teeth. As a small ‘cap’ that sits on the visible part of your Tooth, they are a very non-invasive and simple dental solution.

At ConfiDental Clinic, your Dental Surgeon will discuss your options with you depending on your individual requirements. To learn more about Dental Crowns and if this is the treatment for you, get in touch with us today.

What is a Dental Crown?

A Dental Crown fits over teeth that have had extensive damage and are letting your smile down as a result. They are an aesthetic restoration for broken, decayed or discoloured teeth, or those with large fillings.

Made from a variety of materials, Dental Crowns are used to restore strength, shape, and appearance. As Crowns completely cover up the tooth, it is necessary to remove part of the tooth to accommodate the restoration.

Why choose a Dental Crown?

Over time, your teeth can get damaged from a variety of reasons. Crowns are required or advised for various reasons, including:

  • To restore function to a broken tooth
  • To protect a weakened tooth vulnerable to fracture, i.e. if it has had root canal therapy
  • To improve the aesthetics of a tooth/teeth
  • To replace existing crowns with poor aesthetics or function

Dental Crowns can help to restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength and appearance.

Crowns also have additional benefits such as:

  • Relieving discomfort and dental pain from a damaged or sensitive tooth
  • Protecting teeth from being damaged further
  • Helping to cover a Dental Implant or Bridge
  • Improving diction and enunciation

Dental Crown Procedure and Treatment

Fitting a Dental Crown will usually take two appointments to prepare for the procedure, as well as a second appointment for the fitting. Our dentists at ConfiDental Clinic will first check for any damage to the internal structure of the tooth. Then, we will gently shape the tooth to accommodate the Crown. We take digital impressions of the prepared tooth and record the shade. This information is packaged up and ready to send to the dental laboratory where the Crown is made.

We will provide a temporary Crown so the tooth is protected. When we see you again for the fitting of your custom Crown, the temporary Crown is removed and the new permanent one is fixed in place with strong dental cement. As long as a Dental Crown is looked after carefully, by avoiding very hard foods and thoroughly cleaning teeth, they can offer a natural-looking restoration which lasts for years.

Types of Dental Crowns Available

There are five types of Dental Crowns available, and our team at ConfiDental Clinic will discuss these options to help decide which is best for your individual needs.

Zirconia

Zirconia is a particularly strong metal-free material. It is first class in meeting both strength and cosmetic factors. Zirconia is strong enough to withstand the forces of mastication, so can be used for restorations on both front and back teeth.

EMAX

EMAX was specifically designed to replicate a natural tooth. It is a composition of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic which is translucent, durable and strong and can be used for restorations on both front and back teeth.

All Porcelain

All Porcelain crowns are usually used for restorations on front teeth due to their highly aesthetic properties. These crowns have a natural, translucent appearance.

Gradia

Gradia Crowns are metal-free, strong and have high-wear resistance. As they do not contain metal, they are more naturally aesthetic than bonded metal crowns.

Porcelain Bonded to Metal

These crowns are very strong due to the metal substructure yet still aesthetically pleasing as porcelain is bonded to the metal. Porcelain bonded crowns are recommended for patients who have heavy bites due to their robust strength.
