Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

In the UK, over one million root canal treatments are performed each year. The treatment is an effective long-term solution which can prevent teeth from being extracted or conditions from worsening further. If you are suffering from tooth decay, leaky fillings, severe damage to a tooth, or an infection, you may be recommended to see a dentist for root canal treatment.

At ConfiDental Clinic, our experienced dental surgeons will discuss your condition and why root canal treatment may be the best solution for your teeth. To learn more about Root Canal Therapy and if this is a treatment for you, get in touch with us today.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment, or endodontics, is the diagnosis and treatment of symptoms or diseases affecting the pulp or nerve of the tooth.

Your teeth are composed of several layers beneath the outer layer of white enamel, which form two parts – the crown and the root. The second layer is known as Dentine, which provides support for the enamel and the structure of the tooth, all while protecting the soft tissue inside, called the dental pulp.

Root canal treatment is needed to treat teeth or a tooth that gets infected at the centre. It is an effective, long-term solution which can save an infected tooth from needing to be extracted, and also stops the infection in its tracks. The treatment involves removing the infected pulp from the innermost part of the tooth.

If the infection is left untreated, it can travel down the root of the tooth and onto the jaw bone and form an abscess. This can cause considerable pain and swelling from the abscess.

Signs you might need Root Canal Treatment

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. There are various symptoms that could mean you need the treatment, including:

  • A chipped or cracked tooth
  • Pimples on the gums
  • Severe pain while chewing or biting
  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, even after the sensation has been removed
  • A metallic taste in the mouth
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Deep decay or darkening of the gums

Provided the tooth otherwise has a good prognosis, root canal treatment is the favourable option in order to save the tooth. In some cases, if the pain and swelling have subsided, there is an option to do nothing and monitor the tooth. Your dental practitioner will inform you of the risks involved.

What to Expect from the Procedure

Root canal treatment usually requires several appointments with one of our dentists, particularly as it will depend on the type of tooth being treated. When the custom tooth has been prepared, it will be covered and temporarily restored until the next appointment.

  • The infected pulp is removed under a local anaesthetic, and the root canals are flushed with an anti-bacterial solution
  • The canals are expertly shaped with tiny, flexible instruments and washed again to remove any debris, eliminating any bacteria and infection present
  • The freshly cleaned root canals are then filled to seal the tooth and prevent bacteria from entering
  • The tooth is finally topped off with a permanent filling or crown to help restore shape and functionality

However, immediately after treatment, your dental practitioner may only restore the tooth with a temporary or semi-permanent restoration for a period of time so that tooth can be monitored for any further symptoms before permanently restoring.

How Effective is Root Canal Treatment?

The success of root canal treatment can never be guaranteed, however, following a full assessment by your treating practitioner, they can advise whether a root canal treatment would have a good prognosis and provided there are no complications during treatment and subsequent restoration, long-term success is overall high.

Should a root canal treatment fail, there can be the option of a re-root treatment, and our dentist may recommend an appointment with our Specialist Endodontist. There are other reasons you may be recommended an appointment with a Specialist Endodontist, including if the roots are curved or sclerosed (closed), or if it is difficult to access, as they use specialist equipment to deal with these problems.
